Glow Plankton

Meet the Magic: Glow Plankton at Plant & Pottery Co.

There are plants…

There is pottery…

And then there is living light.

Let me introduce you to our magical little glow makers: dinoflagellates. At Plant & Pottery Co., we’re always glowing and growing something a little unexpected  and this time, it’s bioluminescent plankton.

What Are Dinoflagellates?

Dinoflagellates are microscopic marine organisms that naturally produce light.

When gently swirled or moved in the dark, they emit a soft, electric blue glow. The same kind of glow you see in magical bioluminescent beaches around the world. The species we culture is commonly known as Pyrocystis.  a type of plankton famous for its brilliant nighttime shimmer.

They don’t need batteries.

They don’t need plugs.

They are living light.

Why Do They Glow?

Glow plankton light up as a defense response. In nature, the flash of light can startle predators or attract even bigger predators to scare them off. It’s a tiny survival strategy that just happens to look like pure magic.

How to Care for Your Glow Plankton. These little light-makers are surprisingly easy to care for.

They need:

• A natural light cycle (bright indirect light during the day)

• Darkness at night

• Room temperature

• Gentle handling

Think of them like a plant crossed with a pet crossed with a science experiment.

They follow a circadian rhythm meaning they glow best at night after a full day of light exposure. Over-shaking or constant disturbance can stress them, so we always say: swirl, don’t shake. With proper care, your glow plankton can live for months.

Why I Brought Them to the Shop

Because we don’t just sell plants.

We sell wonder.

Glow plankton are conversation starters. They’re educational. They’re calming. They’re nostalgic. They remind us that even the smallest living things hold power.

In a world that feels loud and overstimulating, there is something grounding about turning off the lights… swirling a jar… and watching tiny sparks respond.

It’s a reminder that life responds to energy.

And so do we.

A Little Disclaimer (Because Science)

Glow plankton are living marine organisms. They are not toys. They require consistent light cycles and care. We provide full care instructions with every culture.

If they stop glowing, it doesn’t always mean they’re gone  sometimes they just need rest, darkness, or time to reset their rhythm.

And yes  we are always here to help troubleshoot.

Glow Plankton Care FAQ

(Pyrocystis fusiformis)

Caring for your Glow Plankton is simple, mesmerizing, and incredibly rewarding. Below are the most common questions we receive — along with clear tips to keep your plankton healthy and glowing beautifully.

Why aren’t my Glow Plankton glowing?

There are a few common reasons:

1. They need a consistent light–dark cycle.

Glow Plankton must experience real darkness at night in order to glow properly.

2. They’re adjusting after transporting

Transport can be stressful. Allow 3–5 days for them to settle into their new environment.

3. Environmental stress.

Keep them at room temperature between 59–78°F (18–24°C) and avoid sudden temperature swings.

4. They need nighttime stimulation.

Glow Plankton only glow when disturbed in complete darkness.

In a fully dark room, gently swirl or lightly tap the container to activate their bioluminescence.

What is the best light schedule?

Glow Plankton thrive with a consistent light / dark rhythm.

Use:

  • Indirect natural light or
  • or indirect light from grow light on a timer. (Think not directly under but off to the side)

Avoid:

  • Direct sunlight
  • Bright Grow lights
  • Any intense light that heats the container

Example Light Cycle

  • Light ON: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Light OFF: 5:00 PM – 7:00 AM

Consistency is more important than the exact timing.

There’s brown material inside — is that normal?

Yes — and it’s a good sign!

Glow Plankton naturally appear brown during their daytime cycle. This is completely normal.

If you notice them settling:

  • Gently swirl to redistribute.
  • Keep them away from direct sunlight or grow lights.
  • Limit nutrient feeding to once every 1–2 weeks.

How often should I feed my Glow Plankton?

Feed with nutrients every 1–2 weeks, only when needed.

A sign they’re ready for feeding is visible during the daytime:

  • A thin line of aggregation forming at the waterline.

Overfeeding can stress the culture, so less is more.

My Glow Plankton isn’t glowing — are they dead?

Not necessarily.

Glow Plankton are sensitive and can become stressed from transport or environmental changes.

Important reminders:

  • Never shake the container.
  • Only gently swirl or lightly tap.
  • Allow several days of consistent light-dark cycles for recovery.
  • Daily gentle swirls during nighttime are beneficial.

Most non-glowing cultures simply need rest and routine.
